  2. Gristmill - Ashley Glynn & Kyle Harris

The gristmill was erected between 1770 - 1771. It was capable of producing between 5,000 and 8,000 pounds of flour. Over 29 years, Washington's wheat expanded to being involved in the overseas markets. The flour was used to pay the slave population. In 1791, the gristmill became patented. The gristmill is reliable and still is fully-functioning today.

  4. Ben and Juliah- Landscape and Garden
George Washington had put a lot of thought into creating the garden. Although he did create the landscape he did not want to maintain it. He had hired professional landscapers in 1762. The professional landscapers were at a very skilled level to be able to keep up with the complex design of the garden. The gardeners also tried to figure out a way to maximize the life of the fresh produce; they used glass frames, and bell jars to retain heat in the gardens. George Washington also ensured that he had a "pleasure area" in the garden for his family, and guest's to enjoy the surroundings. There is also a greenhouse on the property. The greenhouse is the second largest building, and also one of the most advanced greenhouses of the time period.

  9. Washington understood the need to open the executive residence and properly receiving those who called on the President. Every Tuesday afternoon Washington received male callers from three until four o'clock in the afternoon. The levees held by Martha Washington every Friday evening were less formal affairs that included both men and women. George Washington understood that his forums set precedents for future presidents to follow, and he took seriously the need to make certain that dinners were dignified and befitting of his guests. Once he became President, Washington ensured the purchase of an ensemble of tablewares appropriate to the type of entertaining that he sought to establish. Approximately three dozen dining chairs, probably upholstered in matching crimson satin, circled the tables assembled for Washington's guests. Washington's carefully-planned ensemble of dining ware produced an image of elegance mixed with respectability.

  11. Washington's tomb was redone and him and his family were moved in 1831 at Mount Vernon. Washington was originally buried with the rest of his family at their old tomb. In his will, he wanted the tomb redone and placed at Mount Vernon. The tomb is built from bricks, with an iron gate all around. The American flag is placed outside and the coffins are mad from marble. The tomb is part of the tour at Mount Vernon. The tickets are $17, hours are from 9am-5pm, open every day of the year.

  12. George Washington was the only founding father to have operated a commercial distillery. His distillery was the largest in the nation at it's time. The main drink brewed was whiskey.
